Juried Critique Rules

    • Each paid member may enter two (2) maximum total works of art (subject to change). They can be any "two-dimensional" medium (including modified collage).

    • All submitted art must be in gallery-ready condition, properly framed with wire hanging (no sawtooth). Watercolors and pastels must be matted, framed (including glass/plexiglass), no cardboard backing. Photography/digital art must be similarly prepared. Any medium on canvas is acceptable without a frame, providing it has a full "gallery wrap." (The actual painting must continue around the edges and be neatly attached at the back.) Modified collage must fit into a standard-depth, two-dimensional art frame.

    • All paintings will be critiqued/juried without regard to categories. Photography/digital art will be considered a separate (ribboned) competition: such cannot compete for Painting of the Year, but each (quarterly) winner can compete for a People's Choice ribbon at the annual SOSA banquet.

    • At each quarterly juried critique, six top paintings will be chosen from all submitted paintings. The Painting of the Year will then be chosen at the annual banquet, by juror, from the year's best.

    • If a winning quarterly painting is sold prior to the banquet, the artist is permitted to submit a properly framed print of that same painting for entry into the Painting of the Year competition.

    • The winning artist of Painting of the Year will receive a $50 cash prize and one free SOSA membership for the following year.

    • All art submissions for the critique meetings must be delivered to the site between 6:15 pm and 6:45 pm on that evening. No late arrivals will be accepted into the critique. Due to time constraints, approximately 32 submissions will be selected for that evening's critique. Once a painting/photograph has been critiqued, it may not be submitted again.

Please Note:

  • To enter a work, you must be a currently paid member of SOSA.

  • No copies of published photography or other artist's work.

  • No using published photos for painting's subject matter.

  • All work must be the actual, one-of-a-kind original (no prints).

  • No paintings can be submitted from classroom or workshop tutorials.

  • The critique helper will ask if the painting is totally your own work.
